What is a pink slip for driving?

I’m going to buy a car from a private seller. Everything is just about finalized, but my dad told me to ask for the pink slip before I hand over the money. What’s a pink slip?

A pink slip is another term or slang for a vehicle certificate of
title
. Essentially, it’s a document that proves a certain person owns the vehicle.
The reason that your dad suggests that you need the pink slip is to certify that the seller is actually the owner of the vehicle. If they can’t procure the pink slip, that means that either the car doesn’t belong to them or the car is stolen. In either case, you don’t want to buy that vehicle. Keep shopping around instead.
