What happens if I rent a car from Enterprise and get in an accident, but I don't have my own insurance?

I want to rent a car from Enterprise. I don't have my own insurance, and I really can't afford their additional supplemental liability insurance. What happens if I get into an accident?

“When you rent a car, the rental company is required by law to give you state-minimum
liability coverage
, but in most states this doesn’t cover much.
If you were to hit someone, this insurance would come into effect, paying up to the stated limits. Anything over that, you’d be liable for.
If you can’t afford the supplemental insurance, you may want to look at getting
non owners car insurance
. It might be cheaper than the rental car company’s options.
