What happens if I drive my car with a bad catalytic converter?

I’ve noticed for a while that my catalytic converter is going bad, but I won’t be able to afford a replacement until next month, and I need to use my car. So what happens if I drive with a bad catalytic converter?

Driving your car with a bad catalytic converter isn’t the best idea. On top of uncomfortable driving, reduced fuel efficiency, and frequent stalling, it could also result in receiving a ticket or fine. In addition, you could wind up failing your emissions testing.
To be sure, your car will (usually) still run with a bad catalytic converter, but watch out for these tell-tale signs that it’s time to get yours replaced:
  • Lower acceleration
  • Lower gas mileage
  • Jerky turns and movements
  • Loss of power or stall-outs
Remember, a catalytic converter that’s faulty likely won’t meet your state’s emission requirements, making it illegal—so it’s essential to have yours replaced as soon as possible.
