What happens during your first driving lesson?

I recently signed up for a driver’s ed course and my first lesson is on Monday. I’ve always been really nervous about driving and I’m wondering what will be expected of me on my first day.

Congratulations on starting the path towards your license! Once you and your instructor introduce yourselves to one another, they are probably going to run you through all of the important parts of your dashboard and steering wheel. They may ask you to sit in the
driver’s seat
just so that you get comfortable being there.
Some of the things you can expect them to go over include:
  • How to put the key in the ignition and start the car
  • How to shift into the different gears (such as drive and reverse)
  • How to turn on your blinkers
  • Where the gas pedal and brakes are
  • Where your headlights are
  • How to adjust your mirrors
Once you’ve gone over the basics, it’ll be time to start driving. But don’t worry! Your driving instructor will start you off slow, either on a quiet street or an empty parking lot.
Once you put the car into drive, you’ll be asked to slowly lift your
foot off the brake
. Voila! You’ll start moving slowly without even having to push on the gas pedal. You can use this time to get comfortable with the feeling of driving, and they may have you practice pushing the brakes a few times.
