What does my accountant need for my electric car?

I purchased my EV this year and I’m about to file my taxes and claim my credit. What will my accountant need for my electric car?

Like you, many electric cars and plug-in buyers have benefited from the federal incentives program offered to newly purchased EVs. To claim your tax credit, your accountant will need three things:
  • A letter of certification from your dealership.
  • To fill out IRS From 8936.
  • Submit Form 8936 with your income taxes.
Since 2010, the federal government has provided tax credits of up to
$7,500
, toward the purchase of new electric cars.
The first thing you’ll need to do is to ensure that your vehicle qualifies for the tax credit. The amount of the credit is based on the capacity of the battery used to power your car.
But you can save even more by fine-tuning your car insurance policy.
