What does MPG mean for electric cars?
I know MPG means miles per gallon in regular cars, but what does mpg mean for electric cars and how is it different?

You’re spot on—but MPG is known as MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in electric cars and is used to measure the fuel efficiency of vehicles that don’t run on liquid fuels.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created this measurement to compare the energy consumption levels of electric cars with vehicles that run on gas.
Your electric vehicle’s (EV) MPGe rating is calculated by measuring the vehicle’s electrical consumption per distance. Instead of the usual MPG rating, this is the number you see on the EV’s window sticker.
A higher MPGe means a higher rating, indicating that the car will make the best use of its electrical power. A lower rating will mean the opposite. If you own an electric vehicle, here are some tips to help improve your car’s MPGe:
- Economy mode: Take advantage of this setting; it automatically aims to save battery life and reduce the car’s energy.
- Limit the use of in-car features: Using seat warmers instead of the heating system helps to extend the car’s MPGe. Cutting back on AC and limiting media system use can also help you save on energy.
- Follow the speed limit: In most electric cars, vehicle efficiency decreases quickly at speeds above 50 miles per hour.
