What does GTX stand for in my car’s model name?

I recently attended a car show and saw the amazing 1971 Plymouth GTX driven by Dominic Toretto in The Fate of the Furious, and I was wondering—what does GTX stand for?

Anyone who’s spent any time around performance cars probably knows what terms like GT and SVT stand for, but GTX is a bit complicated. The GT stands for Gran Tourismo or Grand Touring, but the X doesn’t actually mean anything.
Today, an X in a car’s trim means extra—as in extra equipment. But when the marketing team was deciding what to name the car they built to compete with the Pontiac GTO, they just chose something that sounded close enough without being an exact copy of their competitor.
So, technically, GTX doesn’t mean anything, but based on today’s trim specifications you could argue it means Grand Touring Extra.
