What Does A Catalytic Converter Do In The Pontiac G6?

I was having my oil changed and my mechanic told me that my Pontiac G6 needs a new catalytic converter. He also said it’s going to cost $1,700! I’m worried that he’s just trying to squeeze more money out of me. Is that a fair price for that job? And whatever is a catalytic converter? Is it really that important?

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with your converter. The catalytic converter in a
Pontiac C6
(or any car) helps minimize harmful emissions by converting certain exhaust compounds into safe gases. It is essential for managing engine behavior.
More importantly, most states legally require cars to have functioning converters. If yours is broken, you’ll probably fail any emissions tests. So, to answer your questions, yes—it is rather important.
Unfortunately, $1,700 is a fairly standard price for replacing a converter. Common repairs like this can really put a strain on your finances. You may want to contact your
car insurance
provider and review your policy—you may be able to get the cost paid for!
If not, you might want to consider finding a new policy with more extensive coverage. You can easily do so—and save some money to pay for your new converter—when you use
