What documents are needed to travel to Canada by car?
I’m going skiing in Vermont and I want to drive to Montreal to check it out. I’ve never driven to Canada by car, but I’m sure I need a few things. What documents should I get to travel to Canada by car?

That sounds like a great adventure! If you want to travel to Canada by car, you’re going to need the documents listed below:
- U.S. passport
- Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card. You can usually get this card from your current insurance company if you explain that you’re going to Canada. Some border agents may allow you to cross with just an American insurance card, but you might want to get both for a smoother crossing.
Canada also has some of the strictest laws in the world regarding COVID, so make sure to check the Canadian government travel page before you cross the border. As of January 2022, you will need:
- To fill out the online ArriveCAN form.
- Proof of vaccination
- Negative COVID test within 72 hours of your planned border crossing.
