What do I need to sell my car in Virginia?

Can I sell my car in Virginia without the registration? I lost the registration shortly before I listed the vehicle and now I have an interested buyer!

Luckily, you won’t need the registration to sell your car! When you sell a car in
Virginia
, you’ll just need a valid copy of
the car title
for the vehicle. If the previous owner of the car is deceased, you’ll also need a copy of their will and a death certificate.
While Virginia doesn’t require a
bill of sale
in order to sell your car, it’s a good idea to write one anyway. The bill of sale provides a record of your transaction with your buyer that you can reference later if necessary.
Once you sell your car, you’ll need to update your
car insurance
to reflect the change. Check out the

app, where you can see a list of policy quotes that work for you in minutes. The average user saves over $800 per year.
