What do I do if my Subaru back hatch won’t open?

I’m trying to pack for a weekend trip and I can’t get my trunk closed. What do I do if my Subaru back hatch won’t open?

If your
Subaru
back hatch won’t open you can start by attempting to reset the system.
  • Press the rear gate button to allow the trunk to unlock
  • You may need to depress the button for several seconds or press it more than once
  • Pull up the gate
  • Pull it down yourself once the rear gate starts to close
If the hatch is not moving, there might be a problem with the connection or lift supports. If the hatch moves but does not latch, then you should examine the latch itself.
There should be a clicking sound. If you don’t hear a clicking sound, ensure there are no obstructions in the area (like suitcase straps or dead leaves).
If you still can’t figure it out, try calling a mobile mechanic trained on Subarus. They may check the batteries in your key fob and test the hatchback system to locate the source of the problem.
While you wait, now might be a good time to make sure you’re happy with your
car insurance
situation. You can use the
Jerry
app to check your coverage, add extra protection (like roadside assistance, in case this happens again!), or look for a lower rate.
