What do I do if my Ford Focus door won’t unlock with the key?
The battery in my keyless remote died, so I went to unlock my Ford Focus the old-fashioned way. But the key won’t turn in the door! What do I do?

If your Ford Focus door won’t unlock with the key, it could mean problems with your car door, key turn piece, or both.
The most common reasons for a stuck car door include dry or broken locks and broken key turn pieces, such as a broken tumbler or lock tail. Before you call a mechanic (or a locksmith), there are a couple of different tricks you can try to get the lock functioning once more:
- Lubricate the lock. Try pouring a small amount of lubricating oil on your key, then inserting it into your door lock and twisting halfway (or 180 degrees). Repeat this process a few times to loosen the lock.
- De-ice the lock. You may need to invest in a lock de-icer—alternatively, you can try warming the lock-up by holding a lighter close by.
- Broken key. Common issues with keys include broken tailpieces, tumblers, or cylinders. If that’s the case, you’ll need to call up a locksmith for professional assistance.
