What do I do if my 2003 Chevy Suburban won’t go in reverse?

There are actually a few different things that could be the culprit. However, it’s best to have a professional mechanic inspect the problem for you. Here are some of the things a mechanic will check:
- Transmission fluid. Low fluid can cause shifting problems, slipping gears, and issues with overheating. If you don’t have enough transmission fluid, your gears won’t get the lubrication and heat protection they need. If your transmission fluid is dirty, then gunk build-up can keep your car from going into reverse. Topping off fluids and replacing the filter could help.
- Electrical sensor. The electrical sensor in your shifter, called the transmission position sensor, may not be telling your power train to go in reverse. This sensor may need a replacement.
- Valve body. The valve body is the convoluted component that directs the flow of hydraulic fluid to your valves when you shift gears. If this component is on its last leg, it can cause a delay in shifting or prevent you from changing gears altogether.
- Reverse gear. If you hear a loud clunk or clicking noises when you put your car in reverse, your reverse gear may have broken teeth. If that’s the case, you’ll need to pay to replace your transmission.
