There are pros and cons to headers— it is good you are looking into both sides. A header is an add-on to the exhaust system. They allow each cylinder to have its exhaust pipe to expel exhaust fumes instead of all the cylinders sharing one pipe.
This allows the exhaust to leave each cylinder evenly, alleviating back pressure.
