What are some common driving skills needed for city driving?
I just moved from rural Illinois to Nashville, Tennessee, for a new job. I’ve driven in cities sparingly, so I’m a bit nervous about tackling city driving. What are some skills I should learn to improve my city driving?

Congratulations on moving to Nashville; it’s an awesome city! If you want to get better at driving in the city, breathe, relax, and stay calm. That’s the most important skill. Beyond that, apply a few of these tips to become an expert city driver:
- Avoiding rush hour, if possible
- Watching out for pedestrians and cyclists
- Understanding that some motorists ignore traffic signals and the rules of the road
- Recognizing bicycle lanes that share the roadway
- Avoiding the temptation to turn on your road rage
- Slowing down if necessary
- Planning your route before you leave the house
