Legal driving ages vary from state to state, so it’s easy to get confused You can start driving in
Michigan
at the age of 14 years and 9 months—but you’ll need to be 18 to get a full, unrestricted license.The first step of Michigan’s Graduated Licensing Program is to obtain a learner’s license. Before applying, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 14 years and 9 months old
- Complete Segment 1 of a state-approved driver’s education program
- Pass a vision exam
- Meet the Department of State Physical and Mental Standards for Drivers
When you apply, be sure to bring your Driver’s Education Certificate of Completion of Segment 1, a valid Social Security number, proof of identity, proof of Michigan residency, and have a parent or guardian sign your application.
Your learner’s license will allow you to practice driving with licensed supervising adult and allow you to progress through the next segments of a mandatory driver’s education course.
The next steps include an intermediate license, which includes restrictions, followed by a full license without restrictions.
