Should my brakes be hot after driving?
When I got home from work today, I noticed one of my tires was a little flat and tried to inspect it. While I was down there, I felt some heat coming off of my brakes and now I’m a bit worried. Is it normal for my brakes to be hot after driving?

Fortunately, you most likely have nothing to worry about. Brakes are typically hot after driving, so unless you’re experiencing other issues with them, you’re probably good to go.
When your car is speeding along the road, it is creating lots of kinetic energy (energy from motion). Brakes work by squeezing against the rotors, turning the kinetic energy from your wheels into heat.
However, if your brakes seem way too hot—anywhere above 392 degrees Fahrenheit, you might have a problem. Here are a few signs that you might need to get your brakes checked out:
- Vibration in the brake pedal
- Squealing noise when you brake
- Smoke around the tires
- A burning smell
