Should I rent a car in Washington DC?

I won an internship in the Capitol this summer, so I’ll be there for two months. Should I rent a car while I’m in Washington DC?

Congratulations on your internship! You’ll likely get to see a lot of the city while you’re there, but we don’t recommend you rent a car in
Washington DC
.
Washington DC is home to some of the
worst traffic
in the US. Fortunately for you, DC is a very walkable city with a solid public transit system. Save money during your DC stay by skipping the rental and opting for public transit options instead, such as:
  • the Metro train system
  • taxi services, and
  • local buses.
If you do choose to rent a car, be sure you have
rental car insurance
through your provider or through a credit card.
If you don’t have coverage, or you’re not sure it’s the best, let
