Should I rent a car in San Juan?
I’m planning a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico to see my Abuela after what feels like years. I speak fluent Spanish, but I haven’t been to Puerto Rico since I was a kid, and I’m worried about getting around while I’m there. Should I rent a car for my stay, or will I be able to rely on public transportation to get around?

San Juan, Puerto Rico is a city that has only gotten more beautiful over the years—your Abuela will be thrilled to see that you’ve grown just as much as her city has! While Puerto Rico does have a public transit system, its routes are somewhat limited. If you want to be able to get around unhindered by bus routes, we highly recommend renting a car in San Juan.
Here are a few things to consider when renting a car in San Juan:
- Puerto Rico’s highways use an electronic toll system that drivers pay for with an electronic stamp known as Autoexpreso. Ask about the inclusion of the stamp in your rental agreement.
- Some rental companies will rent out vehicles to drivers aged 21 to 24, but they charge drivers under 25 $10 to $20 per day.
- Car rental rates can increase significantly as the date of your trip approaches. You can mitigate these higher rates by reserving your rental car ahead of your trip.
Thankfully, because Puerto Rico is an unincorporated US territory, you will be able to use your American driver’s license and
