Should I rent a car in Honolulu?

Unless you plan to lounge by the hotel pool all day, renting a car in Honolulu,

is a great idea. Although the island of Oahu has a public bus system, public transportation is sparse, and the cost of shuttles, cabs, and rideshares can add up fast. Your resort or hotel might offer a free shuttle service to-and-from the airport, but you’ll most likely have to arrange transportation for yourself. This alone can be expensive, especially if you have a large family requiring multiple cabs or Ubers.
Unfortunately, there are no trams, trains, or subway systems in Honolulu—there’s only a public bus. Waiting around for a bus can waste precious hours, and they might not go to remote attractions like isolated rainforests or breathtaking waterfalls.
You could book a guided tour or two (after all, tour guides offer amazing insight into the island’s local culture!), but tour tickets will get very expensive if you’re booking them for a large group.
Taxis and Uber operate 24/7 on the island, but they’re also a cost-prohibitive option. Additionally, hailing a cab from the side of a volcano is just as difficult as one might imagine.
