Is turning right on a red light a moving violation?

I was driving the other day and didn’t realize I couldn’t turn right at a red light, so I made the turn. Afterward, my brother told me I’m not allowed to do that. There was a cop nearby, but they didn’t stop me. Is what I did a moving violation?

It depends—turning right on a red light may be a moving violation in certain instances. If there is a sign prohibiting right turns on a red light, turning would be committing an illegal turn, which would be considered a moving violation. However, if there is no sign prohibiting a turn on a red light, it is not a moving violation, and you are not violating any traffic laws.
Other examples of moving violations include:

  • Failing to yield
  • Illegal turns

  • Improper passing
