Is there a Georgia smog check on cars?

I’m moving to the Atlanta area pretty soon, but I have an older car. I’m not 100% sure that it will pass an emissions test, but I’m not sure if Georgia even checks. Will my car need a smog check in Georgia?

Georgia has a smog check on cars, but only for the 13 counties in and around the city of Atlanta. Chances are if you’re moving to Atlanta, you’re going to need a
Georgia emissions check
. This smog test is in place for the following counties:
  • Cherokee
  • Clayton
  • Cobb
  • Coweta
  • DeKalb
  • Douglas
  • Fayette
  • Forsyth
  • Fulton
  • Gwinnett
  • Henry
  • Paulding
  • Rockdale
The only way that you can bypass this smog check is if your car is 25 years old or older. If you have a car newer than that, you need to pass an emissions test to register your vehicle.
Hopefully, your car passes the emissions test. The only thing to do after that—other than getting your car registered—is to buy a
