Is the Scoot electric car a scam?
My daughter is turning 16 next month and has expressed interest in getting an electric car for her birthday. I obviously wasn’t going to get her an electric car, but then I saw posts for the Nissan Scoot electric car, and it’s less than $200! Even I can afford that! But my friend told me that it’s a scam, so I’m not sure. Is the Scoot electric car a scam?

Great question! If you’ve found a post on Facebook for the Scoot at $179, especially with free shipping, it is a scam. Many people who have bought these vehicles have simply lost their money, whereas others have received a blender or food processor.
Most of the ads and posts that have been popping up advertise extremely low prices for an electric vehicle, sometimes calling it just a Scoot, sometimes calling it a Nissan Scoot. The prices are usually between $159.95 USD and $179.99 USD, and usually advertise free shipping from China.
This scam has been well planned out—with articles that seem independently written and with shop pages through companies like Shopify. Articles written by these scammers include information about Nissan’s Scoot quad, and that they’ve been deployed in San Francisco.
Nissan
does not have a model of electric vehicle called Scoot for public consumption. Nissan did launch its New Mobility Concept in conjunction with Scoot Networks to study options for all-electric public transportation in San Francisco. Scoot Networks (also Scoot or Scoot Rides) provides public electric scooter and e-bike
sharing
systems. The Scoot Quad was a concept to test how all-electric quads would do for public transportation in that city.These scams using pictures from this project. Some are even copied directly from news stories about it. They are not real products and you will lose your money if you sign up to get one.
