Is the Nissan Leaf an SUV?

I come from a family that is God-fearing, and my youngest grandson, who’s 5, recently asked me if the Pope was Jewish. I kindly informed him that, no, the Pope is not Jewish but Catholic, like him. Then he totally threw me a curveball and asked me if a Nissan Leaf (that his mother, my daughter, drives) was an SUV or not. I was flabbergasted. So after sitting down a moment and collecting myself, I started to wonder—it looks like a hatchback but has some SUV flair to it. If you could enlighten us—is the Nissan Leaf an SUV?

The
Nissan Leaf
is classified as a hatchback and not an SUV, even though crossovers are increasingly blurring the line between hatchbacks and SUVs.
Like most hatchbacks, the 2023 Leaf is small in size yet offers a comfortable and surprisingly spacious interior. It’s also got plenty of tech features including semi-autonomous driving mode (so don’t let that grandson near your keys).
This nimble hatch is great for weaving through busy urban areas, but it’s best not to stray too far with a Leaf. This electric vehicle (EV) is definitely lacking in arguably an EV’s most important area—range. With a maximum range of just over 200 miles per charge, the Nissan Leaf lags far behind competitors such as the
Chevy Bolt
, an electric hatchback with a maximum range of 259 miles, and the
Kia
EV6, an electric SUV with a max range of 310 miles per charge.
(Not to mention a
Tesla Model X
, which gets you 359 miles of range on one charge.)
As well, the Nissan Leaf’s CHAdeMO charging connector isn’t compatible with some public charging stations, another knock on this little electric hatch. So if you’re planning on taking that grandson of yours on a Sunday drive in a Nissan Leaf, stick close to home—for God’s sake.
