Is renters insurance mandatory in Texas?

Next month, I’m moving from California to Texas for work. I’m still searching for an apartment, but most of the places I’m looking at ask for proof of insurance. I never needed renters insurance when I was living in California, but is renters insurance mandatory in Texas?

Congratulations on the move! Texas will undoubtedly be a new experience compared to California.
Legally speaking,
renters insurance
is not mandatory in Texas or any other state in the US. However, if your lease specifies that you need renters insurance, your landlord can legally require it.
Even if you find an apartment that doesn’t require renters insurance, it typically only costs about $200 a year or about $16 a month in
Texas
. In most cases, it’s worth the cost for peace of mind. Should anything happen to your personal property or someone gets injured while you’re living in your apartment, you’d have coverage.
