Is Michigan an at-fault state?

I work for Ford, and they’re transferring me to their head office just outside of Detroit. I’m stoked about the move, but embarrassingly, I don’t know much about car insurance laws in the state. Is Michigan an at-fault state or a no-fault state?

Hopefully, you find lots to enjoy about living around Detroit! Michigan is not an at-fault state—it’s a no-fault state, and one of only 12 states in the country that follows this type of law.
To drive in Michigan, you’re legally required to have
personal injury protection coverage
, which pays for your own medical bills in an accident. This is in contrast to an at-fault state, where the at-fault party must compensate the other motorist for their medical bills.
As a no-fault state, Michigan also requires property protection insurance, which covers you for up to $1 million in damages to other people’s property. The other minimum insurance requirements for the state include:
  • $50,000 per person in personal injury protection coverage
  • $100,000 per accident in personal injury protection coverage
  • $10,000 per accident for personal property damage to a vehicle
