Is lane splitting legal in New York?
I’ve lived in Boston for several years, but I just took a job in Syracuse for a change of pace. I’ve read that this area of New York has some of the best motorcycling roads in the country, so I’m excited to get out on the road. I just don’t know the laws that well. Can I lane split in New York?

Lane splitting is illegal in New York. While New York has some of the best motorcycle road trips in the Northeast, avoid the temptation to lane split.
According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL) 1252 section (c), “No person shall operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.” Unlike in some other states, there’s no gray area. If you’re caught, you can face a fine of up to $150 and 15 days in jail, depending on whether or not splitting the lane causes an accident.
