Is lane splitting legal in Minnesota?

Lane splitting means riding your motorcycle between two vehicles to pass them. This is also known as “threading the needle.” No matter what you call it, lane splitting is not legal in Minnesota—and it’s reckless and dangerous.
Only California explicitly notes that lane splitting is legal and most states don’t address the practice at all. Minnesota, however, is one of several states that specifically calls the practice illegal.
Other Minnesota state laws that apply to motorcyclists involve helmet wearing. Helmets are mandatory if:
- You are under the age of 18; or
- You have a motorcycle instruction permit without a license endorsement yet
