Is it safe to travel by car with gestational hypertension?

I’m about 20 weeks pregnant, but my doctor recently diagnosed me with gestational hypertension. I still want to drive, but I’m not sure if my condition allows me to do so. Can I safely travel in a car if I have gestational hypertension?

Congratulations on the pregnancy, but sorry to hear about your condition. Around 6% of pregnancies result in gestational hypertension, so you aren’t alone.
Fortunately, it is safe to travel by car with gestational hypertension, provided:
  • You’ve been cleared by a doctor.
  • You’re less than 36 weeks pregnant.
  • You have no complications associated with your hypertension, such as shortness of breath or dizziness.
