Is it legal for motorcycles to drive between cars?
My buddy from California says he drives his motorcycle between cars all the time, but I know that’s illegal! He says it isn’t. I’m a Harley guy from Florida. Which of us is right?

Hey, Harley guy from Florida! Ford Focus girl from California, here. It is legal for motorcycles to drive between cars—but only in California. In every other state, driving between cars—also called lane splitting—is illegal.
Let’s dig into that:
- Most states prohibit motorcycles from passing a vehicle in the same lane and riding between lanes of traffic
- Lane splitting is only legal in California right now, but other states are trying to legalize it
- Lane splitting is legal in other countries, including New Zealand and England
