I live near a road that’s technically a highway, but barely any cars go on it. I really want to use it for my running route. Is it legal to be on a highway?

That sounds like a fun idea—but it’s definitely not the safest.
In most states, it is illegal to walk on the highway. That’s because highways are considered restricted roads, meaning that they are specifically designed for fast-driving cars and vehicles. Walking on a highway is dangerous for pedestrians for that reason.
But don’t worry—most states have exceptions for walking on the highway when it’s an emergency situation (for instance, your car breaks down and you have to walk to get help). If you’re ever in this unfortunate scenario, just be very cautious! Or consider adding roadside assistance to your car insurance policy so that you can wait in the comfort and safety of your vehicle for the pros to come bail you out.
