Is it illegal to drive barefoot in California?

I‘m not a fan of shoes, especially if I’m just going somewhere for fun. I guess I should check though. Is it illegal to drive barefoot in California?

I envy your carefree life! Technically, you can keep on living it, too, because it is not illegal to drive barefoot in California—or any other state. Driving barefoot is not mentioned in any state legislation, but experts do have concerns when it comes to safety.
Driving barefoot can hinder
safe driving practices
because it poses the following risks:
  • Driving barefoot can decrease your grip on the pedal and make it easier for your foot to slip
  • Without shoes to help distribute pressure on the pedal, your foot is more likely to get tired and cramp while driving
  • Your feet are completely unprotected in an accident which will be made worse if you have to get around sharp debris like glass or metal
It sounds like you may have some experience in your back pocket, but even veteran barefoot drivers should consider these safety concerns the next time they get behind the wheel. You may want to start keeping some driving shoes in your car, just in case.
