Is dry rot covered by home insurance?

I just discovered dry rot in the basement of our home. The house is old and the damage doesn’t seem related to anything recent. Are we covered for dry rot by our home insurance policy?

I’m sorry to hear about your dry rot issue. These types of damages are never fun. In most cases, your
home insurance policy
won’t cover dry rot damages.
Dry rot is when your wood is damaged by fungus. It’s common in older homes as the wood was untreated, making it more susceptible to dry rot over time. Dry rot is often hidden from sight and caused by small moisture sources, such as:
  • Leaky pipes
  • Inadequate ventilation
  • Damaged gutters
In most home insurance policies, dry rot, mold, and fungus are excluded from coverage unless you have an endorsement for fungi, dry or wet rot, or bacteria.
If you’re dealing with dry rot and remain unsure if you’re covered, you should reach out to your insurer.
While you may not have coverage for this event, consider reviewing your home insurance policy to ensure you have the coverage you need with
