Is driving to Big Sur dangerous?

I want to go to Big Sur and soak up the scenery along the way. However, I’ve heard of mudslides and other disasters happening along the drive. Is it dangerous to drive to Big Sur?

Driving to Big Sur on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is
one of the best road trips in California
! It can be dangerous but doesn’t have to be if you take the proper precautions.
Ensure driving to Big Sur is safe by employing these tips:
  • Remain alert. The PCH is largely a two-lane highway, meaning one lane is traveling in each direction with only a yellow line dividing the two. This type of road is inherently dangerous as it’s very easy to cross the centerline.
  • Take a look at the weather report. You’re right—the area around Big Sur is prone to mudslides and landslides. However, they’re not as common as you think. If rain is in the forecast, slow down.
  • Drive slowly. Watch out for other motorists who stop to enjoy the scenery. Both foreign and domestic tourists will stop in the middle of the road to take pictures because of the lack of a shoulder.
  • Take turns and curves with caution. The PCH is windy and sometimes you can’t see around corners very easily. Exercise care—you never know what obstacle or hazard could be ahead.
You may also want to add roadside assistance or towing and labor coverage to your car insurance policy in case something happens during your trip. If your car insurance company doesn’t offer these options or you feel like you’re paying too much, use the
