I have mild cataracts that don’t impair my vision that much. Would it be a bad idea for me to drive at night? I would love to maintain my independence but I don’t want to be unsafe.

Unfortunately, it’s usually not recommended that you drive at night if you have cataracts. This is because cataracts can cause problems with contrast and light, both of which are inescapable elements of night driving. The direct light from the
of other cars can blur or otherwise distort your vision.
Instead, it’s a good idea to drive during clear weather whenever possible. The best times to drive if you have cataracts are mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and just after sundown, since contrast levels are low and the light won’t hit your face directly.
