Is cruise control fuel-efficient?

Do you use less gas when you use cruise control? My mom always tries to get me to use cruise control because she says it’s better for your car’s fuel efficiency, but I don’t understand why.

Actually, your mom is right! In general, cruise control is fuel-efficient and can save you an average of 7% to 14% on
gas
. This is because when you use cruise control, your car maintains a constant speed.
When you fluctuate between different speeds, you’ll press on the gas pedal more frequently. This causes you to use more gas to drive at the same average speed.
If there are lots of rolling hills, however, cruise control won’t save you very much on gas because your car will have to constantly change speed anyway. As such, this trick works best on the open highway.
