Is coasting a moving violation?

We have a lot of hills in my area and my sister and I love to play “rollercoaster” by putting the car in neutral and letting gravity do its thing. One of my friends is trying to convince me that this is actually illegal. Is coasting a car considered a moving violation?

Rollercoaster sounds like a fun game—but you should definitely make sure it’s legal where you live! While legal in most parts of the United States, coasting is a moving violation in the following states:
  • California
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Michigan
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • Tennessee
  • Washington
These states specifically have rules against coasting on a downgrade because you can lose control of your vehicle speed. This would be considered a moving violation because it occurs at the error of a driver’s performance while their vehicle is in motion, although the severity may vary from state to state.
The penalty for a coasting moving violation also varies from state to state. You may get away with a simple ticket in some states, while in others you may face more serious consequences—like
driver’s license points
.
