Is an Indian driving license valid in the USA?

Congratulations on your new job! Your Indian driver’s license will be valid for up to six months after your date of arrival depending on the laws in your state. However, your license must be issued in English and be easily legible. If your license is not in English, you will need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) before leaving India.
Each state will have different ID requirements for driving, so it is best to contact your state’s motor vehicle department or driver’s licensing department for the details.
If you are eligible, you should apply for a state-issued driver’s license as soon as possible. This ensures that you can keep your driving privileges. In general, you must satisfy the requirements below to be eligible:
- Be 18 years old or over
- Have a valid foreign driving license or IDP (it cannot have expired)
- Be free of medical conditions that will make you unfit for driving
