Is an expired inspection sticker a moving violation in Virginia?
The inspection sticker on my car is set to expire in two days, but I’m not going to have time to get a new inspection. As a result, I’m a bit worried about what might happen if I get pulled over. Is an expired inspection sticker in Virginia considered a moving violation?

An expired inspection sticker is not a moving violation in Virginia, but driving without a valid inspection may result in a traffic citation and a fine. As of 2021, a Virginia law gives a four-month grace period for inspections and it’s now been downgraded to a secondary offense.
A secondary offense means that you cannot be pulled over solely for having an expired inspection sticker, although a different traffic violation could net you a worse ticket for the original infraction plus the expired inspection sticker.
The amount of the fine for an expired inspection sticker varies from county to county, but it’s typically an additional $100 to $200. Since you have four months to get a new inspection, you have some breathing room, but make sure that you get an inspection as soon as possible.
