Is a Subaru Outback an SUV?

I live in a mountainous area, so my two-wheel-drive sedan just isn’t cutting it anymore. A lot of people where I live suggested a Subaru Outback, but it sure doesn’t look like the SUV I need. Is the Outback technically an SUV?

The Subaru Outback is a midsize SUV that has the drivability of the car mixed with the off-road capability and durability of an SUV. And in true Subaru fashion, the Outback has standard all-wheel drive, which should give you the upper hand in the mountains, regardless of what’s going on with the weather.
Some of the other top features of the Subaru Outback include:
  • 260-hp, 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine
  • Seating for up to five passengers
  • Up to 75.6 cubic feet of cargo space
  • 11.6-inch touchscreen with multimedia navigation
  • Rugged styling
  • Up to 32 mpg
  • 9.5 inches of ground clearance for improved off-road capability
  • Continuously variable transmission (CVT)
The Outback has plenty to love, but only if your monthly
