Is a Ford Explorer a good first car?
One of my coworkers was talking about buying a car for his son and said they were considering a Ford Explorer—now, I don’t know a whole lot about cars, but that seems a bit excessive. Is a Ford Explorer a good first car?

Yes and no—whether or not the Ford Explorer constitutes a good first car largely depends on who is going to be using it and for what purpose.
If you’re considering a Ford Explorer for your teen’s first car (or if you yourself are a teen), it probably won’t be ideal—the Explorer does have high safety ratings and the 2010-2013 models are considered fairly reliable, but they don’t get very good mileage and are larger than what a young, inexperienced driver probably needs.
You also have to take into account the fact that a mid-size or large SUV is more expensive to maintain than a smaller SUV, something that—once again—probably isn’t ideal for a younger first-time car owner.
If, on the other hand, you’re a relatively experienced driver and require the extra passenger/cargo capacity of a midsize SUV, the Ford Explorer could serve you very well as the first vehicle you own.
