Is a Ford Bronco a good first car?

I’m looking for a first-time vehicle for myself, and I’m really attached to the idea of a car I can take off-roading and camping with me (some of my favorite hobbies). I’ve heard many positive things about the Bronco from friends, and I love the look of some older models. But are they good first cars?

The
Ford Bronco
is a decent choice for a first car, although if you’re looking for a vehicle that prioritizes safety, the
Ford Edge
may be a better choice.
While the Bronco has received above-average reliability ratings—along with admiration for its off-road capability—it’s not the
best car choice for first-time drivers
new to the road. On top of lacking safety aids (especially in older models), a number of newer Broncos have been recalled for risks of an engine fire, among other problems.
If your heart is set on a
Ford
SUV, it may be worthwhile to take a closer look at the Edge, which falls under the same class as the Bronco and has been recognized by the
IIHS
as one of the safest vehicles for young drivers in its class.
But if nothing but a Bronco will do, try to stay away from older models if possible, and avoid the Bronco II—Ford’s most questionable vehicle—at all costs!
