How old must a child be to ride in the front seat?
I have three beautiful children, and my oldest keeps getting irritated at still being made to sit in the back when no one is riding in the passenger seat. I’m worried that it’s still not safe for him to ride up front yet. How old should a child be before you let them ride in the front seat of your car?

When it comes to driving, our children’s safety comes first, and you’re right to worry about how old your child should be to ride in the front seat. In fact, studies show that children under the age of 13 are safest in the back seat.
When your son turns 13 and wants to move up front, continue protecting him by taking the following steps:
- Move his seat back as far as it will go
- Always require him to wear a seat belt
- Ensure the seat belt crosses the upper chest, not the neck
Keep in mind that if your child is small for his age, he may not be ready to sit upfront even when he turns 13. Vehicles manufacture front safety belts and airbags to provide protection for adults who are at least 5 feet tall and weigh at least 150 pounds. If your son does not meet those criteria, he should remain in the back seat.
