“Points on your driver’s license
and insurance points are two different things that commonly get confused. The NY DMV has a chart that determines how many points you will get on your driver’s license depending on the violation you are convicted for. If you accumulate 11 or more points in an 18-month period, your license will be suspended.
Your insurance carrier uses a point system as well, but the two are not related at all.
There are times when the judge will waive your first speeding ticket and the state says there are no points on your driver’s license, but your insurance policy will have points since they rate your driving behavior.
In most cases, speeding tickets will be two insurance points and will increase your policy for three years.
The rate of the surcharge will be different for every policy and carrier.
Unless you have several other incidences on file with your carrier, your policy will not be canceled.
If the rate is more than what you can pay, shop for cheaper car insurance
. Not all carriers will rate you the same.”
