How much will it cost to fix a dent in a car?

My step-daughter just started to learn how to drive and it’s been terrifying. Even though she’s a cautious driver, she still managed to hit a mailbox and dent the hood of my car. I’m not mad at her; she needs to learn how to drive somehow! The dent is fairly small; how much will it cost to fix a dent in my car?

I’m glad you and your step-daughter are ok! Teaching
teens
to drive is always anxiety-inducing. The good news is that smaller dents can cost as little as $50 to fix. Larger dents can cost up to $2,500, but it doesn’t sound like this pertains to you.
If you don’t mind a little elbow grease, you and your step-daughter can try fixing the dent yourself and save that $50. To fix small dents, you can try the following:
  • Use a (clean) plunger. It sounds silly, but the suction from the plunger can help pull the dent out.
  • Alternate hot and cool temperatures. Start by heating the dented area with a hairdryer, then put ice on it. The quick shift in temperature can cause the dent to pop out on its own.
  • Buy a dent repair kit. Still cheaper than going to a professional, a repair kit gives you everything you need to repair small dents.
As your step-daughter grows in her independence and driving capabilities, you’ll face the steep rise in car insurance premiums all parents face when they add their kids to their policies. But don’t worry;
