How much money does the state of Illinois make from toll roads?
I just moved to Illinois and I’m new to the world of toll roads, as my former home state didn’t have them. I’m curious—how much revenue do the toll roads in Illinois generate? It seems like there are quite a few of them.

It can be a bit of a surprise to be confronted by toll roads when you’re not used to them! In 2021, Illinois made an estimated $1.4 billion from tolls. That’s quite a bit of money, and if you ask a long-time Illinois resident, they might be a bit cranky about it. Here’s why:
The original plan was for the Illinois road tolls to only last until 1973. In fact, “toll free in ‘73” was a popular slogan at the time, as it was promised that the roads would be “freeways” by then. Well, the initial cost of the roads was paid off, 1973 came and went, and (checks watch) almost 50 years later, the toll roads remain.
