The first determinant of cost is whether you need a front axle or rear axle replaced. Front axles are typically cheaper by a few hundred dollars.
The second factor is whether you drive a fairly common economy car or a specialized SUV. More complex, costly vehicles come with a higher price tag for repairs. Some makes and models simply cost more when you need replacement parts. This is a drawback of car ownership! Fancier cars tend to cost more to maintain.
