How much gasoline is saved per electric car?

I’m doing a project for school on electric cars and fuel. Electric cars save a lot of gasoline, especially the fully electric ones. How much gasoline is saved per electric car?

Sounds like a cool project! An electric vehicle with a 50kWh battery would save over 200 gallons of gasoline a year.
We’ll do a bit of a calculation to show how.
Electric cars have different battery sizes and capacities but let’s use a mid-range capacity of about 50kWh for every 100 miles. To convert how much gasoline is saved, we should first see how the fuel sources compare. One liter of gasoline is equivalent to about 8.9kWh of electricity. So if a car needs 50kWh it would be equivalent to 1.48 gallons of gasoline to go 100 miles.
The US Department of Transportation reports that on average, drivers drive about 13,500 miles every year which would mean 199.8 gallons of gasoline and 6,750kWh of fuel. In a year driving an EV means about 200 gallons of gasoline is saved on a vehicle with great fuel efficiency. For older cars and gas guzzlers, the number is much higher.
All the best on your project!
