How much does it cost to charge an electric car annually?
I’m about to buy a Hyundai Kona Electric, and I’m looking forward to all the savings I’ll get from not having to pay at the pump. I may use some public charging stations, but my plan is to install a Level 1 or Level 2 charger at my house. How much does it cost annually to charge an electric car? I’m in California btw.

road trips all the way! And that sounds like a great plan. A Level 1 charger will give you 120-V of alternating current (AC), while a **Level 2 charger will give you 240-V of alternating current (AC). **Here’s what we know about what it costs to charge your electric car each year:
- Electricity costs about **18 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) **in the state of California.
- The majority of consumers charge their car at home, or at least most of the time. Per charge, it costs around $5.59 for a typicalelectric car.
- Since it costs about 4 cents per mile to drive and about $50.51 each month, it’s estimated that you’ll spend just over $600 (or **$606.15 **to be exact) to charge your car annually.
- If you don’t have a charger at home and primarily use a commercial charging point, you’re looking at somewhere between $10 and $30 to fully recharge your battery.
