How much are toll roads in Virginia?

My friends and I are going to be taking an historical road trip through Virginia over the next couple of weeks, and I want to make sure we’re ready for whatever we might encounter. Are there toll roads in Virginia, and, if so, how much do they cost?

Making sure you’re prepared for things like toll roads and bridges prior to heading out on your road trip is one of the best ways to ensure you don’t get sidetracked. This is especially the case in Virginia, where you’ll find multiple toll roads, bridges, and tunnels around the
D.C.
area,
Richmond
, and
Norfolk
.
Generally speaking—and assuming you’re driving a 2-axle vehicle—tolls range from 25 cents to 75 cents per mile depending on the location of the road and time at which you plan to travel it. However, Virginia is home to the most expensive toll road on the East Coast, and possibly in the U.S.—The Chesapeake Expressway. During the week, traveling this highway will cost you $4, but on the weekends, it’s $1.31/mile, which translates to $9 one way.
While most tolls can be paid with a card, do yourself a favor and get some cash before you head out to make sure you’re covered. As you continue to prep for your trip, take a minute to download the free
